How to Use Spare iCloud Storage

If you’re an iCloud user, you must be aware of free 5GB of its space that lets you backup and store your data. The free space offered by iCloud is not enough to save everything, and eventually, you’ll have to buy its upgraded version if you want to keep backing up your phone.

Buying additional space is a lot, the same as 5GB is too little. There are six things mentioned below to use the extra space of your phone.

Keep back-ups of all the devices

If you have a lot of space empty, you can back up all your devices that are linked to the same iCloud account such as iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, etc. Backing up your MacOS seems complicated as it contains a lot of data, but you can backup important files and folders to the same.

The steps to backup your devices with iCloud account are:

  1. After buying up more space on an iCloud, go to the ‘Settings’ app of your iPhone or iPad.

  2. Tap on the profile on the top of the Settings window, and then click on ‘iCloud Backup.’ Follow the same settings for all other gadgets you want to backup.

iCloud will automatically backup your device when it’s plugged in for a charge and connected to the Wi-Fi at the same time.

In case, you want to reinstall an iCloud backup, you’ll have to delete the settings for it by following the steps below:

  1. Go to the ‘Settings’ app.

  2. Locate the ‘General’ tab and click on the same.

  3. Next, tap the ‘Reset’ button.

  4. To finally rest your device, click on the ‘Restore from iCloud Backup’ once your device restarts.

iTunes is another way to reset your Apple device locally. These local resets are capable of transferring data from one device to another. On the other hand, iCloud is used for keeping up a backup, in case it’s lost.

Using the iCloud library to store media

An iCloud library saves your media such as photos and videos, which are then accessible via any device linked to the same iCloud account. A lot of space can be emptied on your iPhone by keeping the low-resolution pictures in the device, while high-resolution media in iCloud.

You can view the high-quality media anytime you want, but make sure to use a good Internet connection to download the same immediately.

The steps to use the iCloud library to store media are:

  1. Go to the ‘Settings’ app and tap on the profile on the top of the window.

  2. Click on the ‘iCloud’ option.

  3. Under the iCloud tab, turn the slider on for ‘Photos’ option, and select between the two options: ‘Optimize iPhone Storage’ or ‘Download and Keep Originals.’

Once you make these settings, you can access your photos on any device using iCloud or the iCloud website on the browser.

To view your media on Mac, access to ‘Photos’ app for the same. To view your media in Windows, download and install the ‘iCloud for Windows.’

Save application data on iCloud

Some applications like Pages and Numbers, etc can save their data to iCloud, by default. If you don’t want to buy additional space for iCloud, make sure to disable these applications from creating backups in iCloud because they take a lot of space, as they aren’t used much.

On the other hand, if you have a lot of storage available, you can save application data in the same for quick access. For example, if you were working with a device that is now damaged, you can still access your application data from any other device as iCloud keeps all the devices in sync.

Save and share files through iCloud

As any other application like Dropbox, Google Drive, etc is used to save your data, additional iCloud storage can work just the same. Not only save, but you can also share your files via iCloud.

If you’re a Mac user, go to the ‘Finder’ and click on the ‘iCloud Drive.’ You can create new folders to save data or share your files at the same time.

If you’re an iPhone or iPad user, you can access your data storage on iCloud with the help of the ‘Files’ application. To save your data in the Files app, click on the ‘Share’ button in the desired application and select ‘Save to Files.’ set the destination for the file to be saved and that is it.

If you’re a Windows user, download and install the ‘iCloud for Windows’ app, and you can work just the same as any other iCloud device. You can also visit the iCloud website using a browser and manage the files. In case you want to share your documents with other people, you can do the same by using the e-mail address.

Create space on your MacOS

If your Mac is running out of space, and you want to unload some of your files, you can do it without worrying about losing your data. You can access these documents or files anytime by following the steps below:

  1. Tap on the ‘Apple’ logo on your Mac and click on the ‘About this Mac’ option.

  2. Locate the ‘Storage’ tab and click on the same.

  3. Tap on the ‘Manage’ button on the right side of the window and click the ‘Store in iCloud.

It’ll save your files and documents in the iCloud storage, freeing up space on your MacOS. Next time when you choose to view these files, your Mac will automatically download the files.

Share iCloud with your family

If your available storage cannot be put to any other use, or you still have a lot of space after backups, you can share your iCloud with your family.

The steps to share your iCloud with family are:

  1. Set up ‘Family Sharing’ before getting started.

  2. Go to the ‘Settings’ app on your device and tap on the profile on the top of the window.

  3. Next, click on the ‘Family sharing on an iPhone’ button.

  4. Locate the iCloud storage button to buy new or share the existing space.

  5. The family sharing iCloud will set up.
