How to Fix Hyper-V Virtual Machine Stuck in Saved State?

Hyper-V virtual machine (VM) often gets stuck in a saved state. This could happen due to multiple reasons. Mostly, this problem can be fixed by backing up the Virtual Machine. In case your system is running out of resources, then it could also be a reason behind this issue. To fix the problem, apply the solutions mentioned below.

Remove Saved State

You should pursue these steps given below:

  1. Firstly, launch the ‘Hyper-V Manager’ on your system.

  2. After that, select the virtual machine you are facing a problem with.

  3.  Click on the drop-down and right-click on it.

  4. Now, select the option of Delete Saved.

  5. When the stored state has been removed, attempt launching the VM once again.

  6. In case you get the “Operation cannot be performed while the object is in use” error, reboot the physical host.


Check the Physical Drives

You should pursue these steps given below:

  1. Go to the Hyper-V Manager screen and select the doubtful virtual machine.

  2. Then right-click on it.

  3. Thereafter, click on the option of Settings.

  4. Navigate to the Settings screen and extend the list SCSI Controller to check the used drives.

  5. In case you see any drive that is connected, then you have to disconnect it.

  6. Now, it should solve the issue.

Modify Folder Permissions

You should pursue these steps given below:

  1. Navigate to the plagued virtual machine folder.

  2. After that, right-click on it and reach the Properties option.

  3. You should select the Properties screen and move to the Sharing section.

  4. Then select the option of Advanced Sharing.

  5. When you reach the screen of Advanced Sharing, mark the box of ‘Share this folder.’

  6. Later, click on the button of Permissions.

  7. Choose the option for Everyone, and mark everything below Allow.

  8. Select the button of Apply and click on the OK button.

  9. Now, check whether the problem is fixed.

Remove the Virtual Machine

You should pursue these steps given below:

  1. Firstly, select the virtual machine VHD file and copy it and paste it anywhere.

  2. Thereafter, launch the ‘Hyper-V Manager’ and remove the virtual machine.

  3. After removing the virtual machine, copy the file of VHD to its previous location.

  4. Then make a fresh virtual machine.
