How to Fix an Email Not Syncing Issue on Android

Has it been a long time since you heard the notification tone on your Android? If this is unusual, chances are there may be syncing issues with your Email app. This can make things go haywire and can cause you to miss out on important emails regarding which you needed to take immediate action. To avoid this from happening, here we are mentioning a few tips to help you fix this issue and receive your important emails on time.

Ensuring Automatic Email Sync Is Turned On

You’ll find this feature to be enabled by default in most of the email apps so that you can receive your emails promptly without any delay. However, if you have made any changes to your email settings previously, it may affect the syncing of emails in your email app. You need to make sure that auto-sync is turned on in your email app. The app will then start automatically looking for new email notifications. Let’s see how to do this in Gmail.

  1. Go to the Gmail app

  2. Select the hamburger icon from the top left corner of the screen and then tap on settings

  3. In case you are having multiple accounts, free to choose the appropriate Gmail account.

  4. Then scroll down the left and then make sure the options are saying Sync Email is turned on.

Manually Enable Email Sync

If automatic syncing of emails does not work, you always have the option to manually enable email sync in your email app. Doing manual email sync forces your email app to look for new emails that your device may not have received yet. This also works just like the auto-sync feature, with an additional step of manually selecting an option for performing the sync. You need to:

  1. Head over to the settings app and then click on the option “Accounts.”

  2. Select the appropriate email account for which you are having syncing issues

  3. Now click on the Account Sync option to get to the sync related options

  4. Now click on the 3-dot menu in the top-right corner which will reveal an option called sync now, tap on that

  5. Now the app will start to fetch your emails, and notifications and chances are you may receive new notifications that you have not received yet.

Freeing up Storage Space on the Device

If your email is accompanied by a large file attachment, your phone must have some storage space available so that the app can successfully download the attachment and sync your mails to the device. If you are facing problems in receiving these types of emails, you need to make sure that your device has enough storage space available. You can go to the storage settings in your Android device and then check for all the directories that are taking up your device space. You may want to uninstall unused or unnecessary apps as well as delete obsolete files. Backing up your media files like your photos and videos to cloud storage can come extremely handy in freeing up device storage. You can use the free 15 GB of Google cloud storage provided in Google Drive for doing that; alternatively, you can also use third-party cloud storage services.

Clearing App Data and Re-Adding Email Account

Clearing the locally stored data associated with Android apps provides a fresh start to the app. This is a Panacea to a lot of problems, especially in cases when you are not sure what the problem is. You can try clearing the data associated with your email client on Android. Head over to the settings and then go to app settings. You see a list of installed apps on the device. Then you will need to click on the email app that you are using. There will be options to uninstall the app, force the app to stop, and to clear the data and cache associated with the app. You need to click on clear cache and then clear storage. This will remove all the email app data locally stored on your device. Then you can open your email client app, which will look as if you are opening the app for the first time, you need to set up your email account by entering the credentials properly. After you are done with that, the app will automatically start syncing new mails from the email servers. Hopefully, by following these tips, you are now able to get your emails syncing properly. Whenever you face any issue with your email app, you can try each of the above-mentioned tips and see which one works out for you.
