Sir Arthur Canon Doyle, the writer of the famous Sherlock Holmes, could never in his dreams have come up with a sensitive and dreamy character like Enola Holmes, who is directly related to his Sherlock. Enola, played by Millie Bobby Brown, is the main character of the currently trending Netflix movie based on author Nancy Springer’s The Enola Holmes Mysteries. Brown is portrayed as a brave 16-year-old girl who is in blood relation with Doyle’s famous detective. The movie starts with the adventure, where Enola’s mother is missing, the marquees are on the run, and Enola, she is on the case.
Scripted by Jack Thorne, the story brings out the sad and cruel side of previous Victorian life, including gender roles, reform politics, family dynamics, and secret societies. However, all of these melancholic aspects of the story are smoothened in no time when Enola does her part. Brown has been praised for her clever, funny, and fourth-wall-breaking energy. She ensures that the audience falls in love with Enola with her dedicated and compassionate acting. It’s as if Brown owns the character, considering that she brought the Enola Holmes book series to her family’s production company for adaptation.
After Brown, comes the confusing Henry Cavill as Sherlock Holmes. Cavill is playing the iconic character, where his parents name him after the famous detective. With the effect of an unrelated man whose parents named their large, handsome son after a famous detective. His chill, suave vibes as Sherlock Holmes are so unlike Doyle’s creation that the movie would almost make sense if he were not there. But his inclusion was essential to establish the connection with the original intellectual property. Fortunately, Enola is interesting enough to keep the audience engaged throughout the movie.
Enola’s story is similar to most of the mid-to-late-’00s young adult fiction protagonists. She is a smart, adventurous, young, and independent woman in a world where these qualities are not appreciated in her gender. Enola is seen to be dressed as a boy in most parts of the movie only because her brother Mycroft (Sam Claflin) insists her to do so. Even after being a part of an unmodern family, Elona comes out to be different from other young ladies. She does not enjoy indulging in silly girl things like e mbroidery and fashion, rather shines in her compassion. All the other women in the movie are elderly and traditionalists. Edith played by the talented Susie Wokoma is a simple teahouse and is disappointingly unutilized.
If you don’t know, The original Enola Holmes Mysteries is a six-book series. And the movie, Enola Holmes on Netflix has adapted only the first part of the whole series. Undoubtedly, Brown is charmingly carrying out the movie, making it a success at the streaming film franchise. Enola Holmes is now streaming on Netflix. So, order that pizza and binge on the fun and mindless mystery of Enola Holmes.
