DC’s Batman: The Long Halloween Comic Book to be Adapted into 2-Part Animated Film

Comic books transport us to a completely different world with its characters and exciting storylines. However, only a few have been successful in establishing themselves as one of the bestsellers. Many comics have been adapted into feature films, television shows, and video games due to their popularity. Now, one more comic will be adapted into a two-part animated movie and will release in the year 2021.

Official Announcement Made During DC’s Virtual Event

Batman: The Long Halloween’s adaptation into a two-part animated film was announced during DC’s virtual FanDome event. The first part of the adaptation will be released in the summer of 2021, and the second part will premiere in the fall. However, there is no official confirmation of who will voice which particular character.

It will be exciting to see how the filmmakers adapt the comic’s narrative into the film and keep in mind the way characters will be portrayed in the adaptation. If anyone has read the comics, they will find that the Joker has a very eerie look, and if the same is incorporated in the film, Batman: The Long Halloween will be an exciting watch.

Batman: The Long Halloween- A Successful Follow-Up to Three Batman Specials

Batman: The Long Halloween is a 13-issue American comic book published by DC Comics in 1996 and 1997. Jeph Loeb has written the comic book with art by Tim Sale. It was a follow-up comic book to three Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight Halloween Specials. The success of the series led to two more sequels titled Batman: Dark Victory and Catwoman: When in Rome.

Batman: The Long Halloween talks about the story of a mysterious killer whose MO is to kill people on their holidays. However, the killer targets only one victim each month. Batman teams up with District Attorney Harvey Dent and Captain James Gordon to find Holiday’s identity before he kills his next victim. The caped crusader sets out to find Holiday while trying to stop a full-blown fight between Gotham’s two most powerful families, Falcone and Maroni. This comic serves as a platform to re-introduce the Calendar Man, one of Batman’s most elusive enemies.

Calendar Man is well aware of Holiday’s identity but is not inclined towards sharing the information with Batman. The story of Batman: The Long Halloween also merges into the story where Harvey Dent becomes Batman’s enemy Two-Face. Two-Face first appeared in Detective Comics #66. This particular comic continues the story Batman: Year One.

The Ending Comes with a Twist

The end pages of the story of Batman: The Long Halloween has an exciting twist- When Two-Face turns himself in, he tells Batman and Gordon that there were two Holiday murderers. However, Batman squashes the credibility of the villainous character’s statement and accuses Two-Face of being the Holiday killer after killing Falcone and a few other people on Halloween. The second Holiday killer confesses to all his crimes. Two-Face is ultimately sent to Arkham prison, and Alberto can delay his execution day based on the plea of insanity.

The twist here is that Harvey Dent knew Alberto was not the Holiday killer. He knew Gilda was the first killer. Alberto suspected Dent of being the first Holiday Killer but ultimately turned out to be a scapegoat for both the killers. This plan was successful because Gilda knew till the time Two-Face does not become an ally of the police; they will never figure out the real story.

Adapting a comic book into an Animated Film is a tedious process. The animators have to be very careful when they design characters as per the comic because an authentic representation will bring out the best in Batman: The Long Halloween.
