The Addams Family: 6.9 (1991)
The Addams Family is a computer-animated black comedy written by Matt Lieberman, directed by Greg Tiernan and Conrad Vernon, and created by Charles Addams. The movie stars the voice of Charlize Theron, Oscar Isaac, Finn Wolfhard, Chloe Grace Moretz, Allison Janney, Snoop Dogg, and Bette Midler. The film was released in the United States by United Artists Releasing on 11 October 2019. The movie received mixed reviews from critics and collected a gross of $203 million on a production budget of $24 million. The sequel of the film is scheduled to be released on 22 October 2021 with Tiernan and Vernon.
While talking about horror movies, it is not necessary to be scary or freaky. Sometimes, it just needs to be kooky and creepy. So based on the classic show, Addams Family is not a traditional horror, and it still manages to be into the horror genre in a way that no one thought.
Cabin In The Woods: 7.0 (2012)
The Cabin in the Wood is an American horror comedy produced by Joss Whedon and directed by Drew Goddard; this film is his directorial debut. It stars Chris Hemsworth, Kristen Connolly, Franz Kranz, Anna Hutchison, Bradley Whitford, and Richard Jenkins. The story revolves around a group of friends who retreat to a remote forest and fall in a trap of backwood zombies while the technician manipulates the event. Whedon and Goddard have worked together on various projects including Angel and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. These two wrote the screenplay in three days describing the attempt to redefine the slasher genre. The special effects, makeup, prosthetic, and monster costumes were done by veteran scary movie actress Heather Langenkamp and her husband, David LeRoy Anderson. The shooting took place in Vancouver, British Columbia from March to May on an estimated budget of $30 million.
Cabin in the Wood was planned to release on 5 February 2010 by United Artists and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Still, the project went under development hell and indefinitely shelved due to some financial difficulties.
It is a very dark horror comedy that took the known story and spun it on its head. Cabin In The Wood is a unique horror movie that has enough laughs while also having a great horror movie end.
Fright Night: 7.1 (1985)
Fright Night is an American horror movie directed and written by Tom Holland and produced by Herb Jaffe. The film stars Chris Sarandon, William Ragsdale, Amanda Bearse, Roddy McDowall, Jonathan Stark, Stephen Geoffreys, Dorothy Fielding, and Art Evans. The movie was released on 12 August 1985 and collected a gross of $24.9 million at the box office. It received positive reviews from critics and has become a cult classic. There are two sequels of the franchise Fright Night, Fright Night Part 2 in 1988, and a remake in 2011, and the third sequel Fright Night 2: New Blood in 2013.
The plot revolves around 17-year-old Charley Brewster, who is a fan of classic horror movies, and a horror TV series titled Fright Night. One evening, Charley discovers that his neighbor Jerry Dandrige is a Vampire and is responsible for the disappearance of several people. In a vampire film, fans expect that they would see Frankenstein’s Monster or Dracula wandering around a spooky castle or graveyard and not in a suburban neighborhood.
The filmmakers creatively made a Dracula movie and put their flavor in creating a horror-comedy film for a monster next door, a kind and a charismatic vampire who likes to have a cup of blood against spice and sugar.
Bone Tomahawk: 7.1 (2015)
Bone Tomahawk is an American Western horror movie directed and written by S. Craig Zahler. The film stars Patrick Wilson, Kurt Russell, Lili Simmons, Matthew Fox, Richard Jenkins, David Arquette, Evan Jonigkeit, and Sid Haig. It premiered at the Fantastic Fest on 25 September 2015 and was released on 25 October 2015 by RLJ Entertainment. The story revolves around two drifters, Purvis played by David Arquette, and Buddy played by Sid Haig making a living killing travelers and robbing. They get spooked by the sound of approaching horses and hide behind a hill and encounter a Native American burial site. Buddy is killed, and Purvis escapes.
Mixing the genre might be risky and not always result in a good recipe for success. On the other hand, blending the genre of horror-comedy and dark fantasy can usually draw a haul at the box office, and the idea of mixing horror and western genre was a risky play.
A slasher film is set during a western movie and works tremendously, drawing fans with gruesomeness and fantastic scares as well as it’s intriguing characters.
Midsommar: 7.1 (2019)
Midsommar is a folk horror film directed and written by Ari Aster and starring Jack Reynor, William Jackson Harper, Florence Pugh, Ellora Torchia, Vilhelm, Will Poulter, and Archie Madekwe. The plot follows a group of friends who travel to Sweden for a festival that occurs once in every 90 years. The movie is co-produced by the United States and Sweden; the film was originally pitched to Aster as a straightforward slasher movie. Aster devised a plot using the element of the concept. Midsommar was shot in Budapest in the autumn and summer of 2018.
In horror movies, some scenes become so intense and brutal that no one can help but stare with bugged eyes. The horror movie Midsommar is a movie full of “what the fuck” moments. From the range of terrifying moments and disturbing imagery, the ending leaves everyone shaking.
The above are some lists of movies that you can watch and spend a spooky Halloween with family and friends.
